Quinn Ewers injury update: Report reveals status for Red River Rivalry

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has missed the Longhorns’ past two games due to an abdominal strain he suffered in UT’s Week 3 win over UTSA. On Monday, 247Sports’ Chip Brown reported that Ewers is expected to return to the starting lineup against the Oklahoma Sooners on Oct. 12.
Ewers suffered the injury on a non-contact play. He was listed as questionable in the week leading up to Texas’ showdown against Mississippi State but ultimately ruled out 90 minutes before kickoff.
Last week, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian revealed what he needs to see from Ewers to allow him to return to the field.
“He’s got to do enough to show me he can play,” Sarkisian said. “I know that’s probably not the answer you wanted, but that’s what I mean. We’ve got a game plan. Can he execute the game plan? I hate to pare it down to that but that’s really the truth. I want to make sure he’s healthy enough to play at a high level. Can he go operate the game plan we have in place for him?”

Arch Manning excels in Quinn Ewers’ absence
Evidently, Texas expects Quinn Ewers to be able to meet these requirements in time for the Red River Rivalry. In Ewers’ absence, second-year QB Arch Manning has started the past two games, leading the Longhorns to back-to-back victories.
Most recently, Manning put on a show in Texas’ 35-13 win over Mississippi State, completing 26-of-his-31 pass attempts for 324 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception. After the win, Sarkisian gushed about how grateful he is to boast such a deep quarterback room.
“What a luxury to have a player of his caliber as our backup quarterback,” Sarkisian said. “We have two great players. We were able to get through this without having to put Quinn (Ewers) out there, and now he’s got two more weeks to get himself healthy for the second half of the season.”
Texas will enjoy a bye this week before squaring off against Oklahoma at 3:30 p.m. ET on Oct. 12.
