With LSU and SMU announcing a two-game series in the 2028 and 2029 seasons, the location for one of those dates is still up in the air. According to Jacques Doucet of WAFB-TV in Louisiana, the 2029 matchup could either be at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on the Mustangs’ campus or at AT&T Stadium, home to the Dallas Cowboys.

The press release from LSU listed Tiger Stadium as the venue for the 2028 matchup, which will take place Sept. 2 of that season. However, it did not list a specific stadium for the 2029 game.

The announcement comes at a time where the SEC is considering a move to a 9-game conference slate. A 9-game schedule was tabled to see how the College Football Playoff would look with its expansion to 12 teams.

AT&T Stadium has played host to a number of college football games over the years. It was the site of a College Football Playoff semifinal game this past season between Texas and Ohio State. It also regularly serves as the site of the Southwest Classic Rivalry between Arkansas and Texas A&M.

The meeting in 2028 will mark the first time that LSU and SMU have played since 1934. It will be only the third time they have faced each other in school history with SMU owning the only win, being a 51-0 blowout in 1922. The 1934 contest ended in a 14-14 tie.

SMU is coming off of back-to-back 11-3 seasons in 2023 and 2024, advancing to the College Football Playoff this past year. The Mustangs went on to lose in the first round against Penn State by a score of 38-10.

LSU just wrapped up its third season under coach Brian Kelly but has no CFP appearances in that span. The Tigers have a 29-11 overall record under Kelly and have never finished with fewer than nine wins in his tenure.

It will be interesting to see where these two teams are at when they finally meet four years from now. They both certainly appear to be on an upward trajectory and perhaps a game at AT&T Stadium could draw a big crowd if that is where the 2029 matchup is ultimately held.

LSU has also scheduled a series with Clemson in 2025 and 2026. It’s clear that Kelly and company are not shying away from playing challenging nonconference slates and perhaps that can work to their benefit.
