North Carolina quarterback Ryan Browne plans to re-enter the NCAA transfer portal, he told On3’s Hayes Fawcett. He transferred to UNC from Purdue in January.

Browne spent two years at Purdue, appearing in eight games as a sophomore in 2024. He threw for 532 yards and four touchdowns during that time while also adding 155 rushing yards. He then committed to North Carolina as part of the first wave of transfer additions under new coach Bill Belichick.

As a freshman at Purdue in 2023, Browne played in just one game. As a result, he will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Ryan Browne played high school football at New Berlin (NY) Milford Academy, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 1,095 overall player and No. 4-ranked player in the state of New York from the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

North Carolina is entering a new era under Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach of the New England Patriots who’s venturing into college football for the first time. His goal is to make UNC the NFL’s unofficial “33rd team,” and the program has been working the portal to round out the roster.

The Tar Heels have 21 transfer commitments so far this cycle, although On3’s Pete Nakos said UNC is trending for more targets now that the spring window is officially open. Former Washington cornerback Thaddeus Dixon headlines North Carolina’s class of transfer additions. He played for Belichick’s son Steve in Seattle and arrives in Chapel Hill as the No. 30-ranked player to hit the portal so far this cycle, according to the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings.

On the whole, North Carolina’s transfer group ranks No. 20 in the On3 Team Transfer Portal Index. The Tar Heels will officially begin the Bill Belichick era Sept. 1 against TCU at home.
