For most of Saturday’s game between No. 3 Texas A&M and South Carolina, it appeared as if No. 4 Alabama could become the first team to punch its ticket to the SEC Championship Game. Following the Aggies’ incredible comeback win however, that is no longer the case.

Alabama could have clinched a spot in the game if it had beaten No. 11 Oklahoma, A&M lost to South Carolina, and No. 5 Georgia lost to No. 10 Texas Saturday night. Because of A&M’s win though, no team can clinch a spot in the SEC Championship Game until the final weekend of games on Nov. 28 and Nov. 29.

The first half was disastrous was Mike Elko‘s Aggies squad, as Carolina jumped out to a shocking 17-3 lead as the first quarter came to an end thanks to a Nick Barrett 17-yard fumble return for a touchdown. The Gamecocks then kicked a field goal on their next possession and scored yet again on the ensuing possession thanks to an 80-yard touchdown pass from quarterback LaNorris Sellers to speedy wide receiver Nyck Harbor.

Trailing 30-3 at halftime, dreams of the first College Football Playoff in program history for Texas A&M were slowly slipping away. Since 2004, teams in SEC play were 0-286 in games when trailing by 27-plus points, which meant that the Aggies were all but toast right? Wrong.

In an unbelievable second half, Texas A&M outscored South Carolina 28-0 to escape with an outrageous win in College Station. A&M out-gained Carolina 371-76 over the last two quarters, averaged 9.8 yards per play to their 2.9, and secured the largest comeback win in program history. Aggie quarterback Marcel Reed enjoyed his best game of the season, passing for 439 yards and three touchdowns. Both of his interceptions came in the first half.

With the win, A&M improved to 10-0 (7-0) on the season. It is currently the lone undefeated team in SEC play, joined by 6-0 Alabama. That however could change on Saturday, as the Crimson Tide are battling with Oklahoma in Tuscaloosa. One-loss Georgia, Ole Miss, and Texas, along with two-loss Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, are all still alive in their race for the SEC Championship Game.

These programs not named Texas A&M and Alabama will need some help to get to Atlanta, but that isn’t out of the question at all. If there’s one thing that is certain in college football, it’s chaos.
