Steve Spurrier on Kevin Schnall ejection: 'I would hope the ump gave him a warning'

Steve Spurrier weighed in on the ejection of Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall during Game 2 of Sunday’s College World Series final against LSU. Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were thrown out in the opening inning of the game after arguing strike calls.
Many noted the quick trigger on the ejection from umpire Angel Campos, as Schnall was seen yelling something in his direction. Spurrier offered his take in a recent appearance on Another Dooley Noted Podcast, saying he just hoped the umpire gave fair warning for Schnall to calm down.
“I would hope the ump gave him a warning like, ‘If you don’t leave now, you’re gonna be out of the game,'” the Hall of Fame football coach said. “If he’d had said that and then the guy just kept yelling and yapping, then the umpire certainly has the right to do that. But I don’t know the conversation before.”
Schnall escalated things by storming onto the field after the ejection, going after the umpire who had thrown him out of the game. Another official attempted to step between Schnall and the umpire he was going after, and was knocked to the ground in the process.
The Coastal Carolina coach addressed the controversial ejection postgame, giving his side of things. To answer Steve Spurrier’s question, Kevin Schanll explained that there was a warning given prior, but he gave a sarcastic remark back that was what triggered the ejection.

“When I come out to ask what the warning is, a grown man shooed me,” Schnall said. “At that point, I can now hear him say there was a warning issued for arguing balls and strikes. At that point, I said, ‘Because you missed three.’ At that point, ejected. If that warrants ejection, I’m the first one to stand here like a man and apologize.”
The Chanticleers ended up losing 5-3 to the Tigers, who claimed the national championship in a 2-0 finals sweep. The ejection of Schnall took centerstage early in the game and ultimately his team was unable to force a Game 3 without him.
NCAA issues statement explaining controversial ejections of Coastal Carolina coaches in CWS final
The NCAA issued a three-paragraph statement addressing the controversial double-ejection of Coastal Carolina’s Kevin Schnall and Matt Schilling in the first inning of Game 2 in the best-of-three series versus LSU.
“NCAA Playing Rule 3-6-f-Note 1 states that balls, strikes, half swings or decisions about hit-by-pitch situtations are not to be argued,” the NCAA statement read. “After a warning, any player or coach who continued to argue bals, strikes, half swings, or a hit-by-pitch situation shall be ejected from the game.”
