If there was a ‘prove it’ type game early in the SEC season, Saturday in College Station would be it. Texas A&M is playing host to Auburn, a pair of teams with plenty of questions. One is wondering how Jimbo Fisher is going to look in Year Six, while Hugh Freeze is getting his feet wet on the Plains.

Texas A&M comes in with a 2-1 record, dropping their road game against Miami. Auburn is undefeated after two games at home and a long flight to the West Coast to face off against Cal. If there is one thing Kayce Smith of Barstool Sports knows through three games, it’s the Aggies’ defense might be suspect.

“The defense is a problem at A&M,” Smith said during Wednesday’s episode of Andy Staples On3. “A&M’s defense is struggling. They have a lot of talent there and they’re good on third down and that’s fine. But can they hold up against an SEC offense with Hugh Freeze, who is known to have some pretty good offenses? I don’t know.”

Even so, she will be taking Texas A&M to cover the 7.5-point spread. She mentioned how well Conner Weigman has been playing, setting a completion percentage record last week. The offense might need time to get going but Smith has her Aggies by more than a touchdown.

“I’m going to take A&M and the points,” Smith said. “I do think it’s going to be close in the first half, though. I don’t think A&M just comes out and fires… Maybe it’s wishful thinking but I am going to take A&M and the points.”

Staples views the game a little differently. To him, the Auburn defense does have some talent on there, having the potential to slow down Weigman. Mix in Freeze’s specialty being on the offensive end and it could be a recipe for a tight game.

Auburn may not go on to why but Staples feels as if a spread of more than a touchdown is a lot.

“Auburn’s best talent is on the defensive side of the ball,” Staples said. “That’s what’s in the back of my head when I get 7.5 points in a game. ‘Okay, maybe they do slow down A&M’s offense a little bit.’

“So, I am going to take Auburn to cover here. I don’t know if they’re going to win but you’re giving me more than a touchdown, I feel pretty good about that.”
