Former Texas softball pitcher Cat Osterman gave some sage advice to the next generation of players Saturday during the Women’s College World Series. Using Oklahoma State’s Kelly Maxwell, Osterman encouraged pitchers to pay close attention to slow motion replays.

“Pitchers… watch the spin of these pitchers when there’s slow mo replays!” she wrote. “(Kelly Maxwell) known for up-spin, but such great true drop spin on that pitch.”

Maxwell helped lead the Cowgirls to their second win of the WCWS on Saturday with a 2-0 triumph over Florida. She pitched a full seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out nine batters to improve her season record to 21-4. A junior, she leads Oklahoma State with 302 strikeouts and a 1.15 ERA. No Gators player finished with more than one hit.

Maxwell did find herself in a bit of controversy in the seventh inning when one of her pitches appeared to hit Florida outfielder Katie Kistler. However, the umpire ruled it hit her bat and was a foul ball. She came back to the plate and grounded out for the second to last out of the contest.

Osterman is considered one of the greatest pitchers in Longhorns history, so young players might want to heed her advice. She ended her career with a total of 17 no-hitters across four seasons, and as the Big 12’s all-time leader in wins, ERA, strikeouts and shutouts. She also ranks top 10 all-time across the NCAA in all categories.

Following her collegiate career, Osterman was the No. 1 pick in the National Pro Fastpitch softball league draft. She also won a gold medal for the USA in 2004 while still in college, and helped claim silver medals in 2008 and 2020.

With the win Saturday, Oklahoma State and Kelly Maxwell get a day off before returning to the field Monday. There they will face the winner between Arizona and Texas at 7 p.m. ET. If the Cowgirls win, they will secure their spot in the WCWS final series. If they lose, a rematch will be played immediately after with the winning team advancing to the final.
