Transfer QB Ethan Hampton decommits from Wake Forest, schedules two new portal visits

Following the decision by Dave Clawson this afternoon, QB Ethan Hampton has changed his mind about his next school.
After committing to Wake Forest over the weekend, Hampton has now decommitted from the program per On3’s Pete Nakos according to Next Sports. That comes within an hour of the news regarding Clawson stepping down as head coach of the Demon Deacons.
Hampton never reportedly signed anything with Wake Forest since his commitment on Saturday. Now, with that, Hampton will be able to reconsider his options in the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Per Nakos, Hampton has now scheduled visits for this week at Illinois on Tuesday and then Tulane on Friday.
Hampton had spent the past four seasons as a redshirt junior with Northern Illinois. While with the Huskies, he appeared in 22 games, including double-digit starts after this past season in De Kalb.

In total during his collegiate career there, Hampton is 239-412 (58%) for 2,568 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Most of that came this past season as he posted 58.3% completion for 1,600 yards, a dozen scores, and six picks as NIU’s QB1.
Per On3’s 2025 Top Transfer Portal Players, Hampton is currently the No. 80 QB and No. 804 overall transfer.
With the news about Clawson in Winston-Salem, Hampton may not be the only player re-entering, let alone entering, the portal in the coming days. Still, his time at Wake Forest is over before it ever really even started as he’ll begin looking for another program again throughout this week.
