Ty Amundsen resigns as Millennium’s head coach

With under two weeks remaining until the first day of school in the Agua Fria Unified High School District, one of basketball’s premier public school coaching jobs on the West Coast has opened up.
On Thursday morning according to Arizona Varsity’s Gregg Rosenberg, Ty Amundsen resigned as head boys basketball coach after eight seasons.
According to Rosenberg, Amundsen’s resignation comes as a decision to pursue a different coaching opportunity.
The players and families were notified on Wednesday evening in a meeting and the job has since been posted on the AIA’s website.
During his eight year run as head coach of the Tigers, Amundsen amassed a 159-62 record building the program into a national power during that time while appearing in four state championship games.
Prior to his time at Millennium, Amundsen spent five seasons as head coach at St Mary’s and six at Estrella Foothills where he won three state championships.

During his time as a high school head coach, Amundsen sent two players to the NBA in current Nuggets forward DaRon Holmes II and retired player turned assistant coach Corey Hawkins.
The Tigers current roster led by Cameron Holmes and Adan Diggs looked poised to potentially add two more pros to Amundsen’s resumé.
In February as Millennium was preparing for its second round matchup in the Open Division, Amundsen suffered a Heart Attack that required stents to be inserted for a blocked artery.
Four days later, Amundsen returned to the gym to watch Millennium defeat district rival Canyon View 89-50 and a week later was back on the court coaching the Tigers to a quarterfinal victory over Notre Dame Prep.
