A new favorite emerges

CJ Stroud put up a historic performance in Ohio State’s blowout victory over Michigan State on Saturday. He tied a single game Ohio State record with six touchdown passes, and he did that just in the first half. Stroud ultimately completed 32 of his 35 passes for 432 yards and the six touchdowns in Ohio State’s win. He has put up big numbers all season, and his Week 12 performance was enough to launch him into being the Heisman favorite. He has an even bigger stage next week against Michigan in a game that could answer some questions about the College Football Playoff.

Bryce Young also had a big day on Saturday in Alabama’s close win over Arkansas. He completed 31 of his 40 passes for 559 yards and five touchdowns. His 559 passing yards set an Alabama record and passed his previous season high by 188 yards.

On the season, Stroud has led the most dominant offense in college football. He has thrown for 3,468 yards, 36 touchdowns and five interceptions. Young has thrown for 3,584 yards, 38 touchdowns and three interceptions along with two rushing touchdowns. The two are clearly solidified as the two Heisman favorites through Week 12.

Matt Corral had what was probably his best performance over the last month on Saturday, but he has significantly cooled off after a dominant start to the year. Corral has thrown for 3,100 yards, 19 touchdowns and three interceptions with 133 carries for 552 yards and ten touchdowns. Kenneth Walker was essentially taken out of the game plan against Ohio State due to a large, early deficit. But on the year, he still has 1,498 yards and 17 touchdowns and is the Heisman favorite among non-quarterbacks after Week 12.

Kenny Pickett and Desmond Ridder are two quarterbacks that are longshots at this point in the season. Both have played pivotal roles on their respective offenses, leading Pittsburgh and Cincinnati to very strong seasons.

It is unlikely that a defensive player wins the Heisman, but Jordan Davis and Will Anderson Jr would be deserving choices. Davis is a force on Georgia’s interior defensive line. Anderson has dominated the SEC with great play all-around on Alabama’s defense.

Brian Robinson, TreVeyon Henderson and Jameson Williams have all put up strong numbers, but likely not enough to be in the conversation with the other contenders.
