Urban Meyer predicts Oregon to win at Penn State

No. 3 Penn State hosts No. 6 Oregon in Happy Valley this weekend in the 22nd ‘White Out’ game. The game holds massive College Football Playoff implications and marks a rematch from last season’s Big Ten Championship game.
Oregon, in its first season as a member of the Big Ten, downed Penn State 45-37 in the title game to improve to 13-0 and wrap up the No. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff. The Nittany Lions would get the last laugh, however, as they advanced to the CFP Semifinal while the Ducks were upset by eventual National Champion Ohio State in the Quarterfinal.
Ahead of this year’s matchup between the two college football staples, legendary head coach Urban Meyer made his prediction on the game on this week’s edition of ‘The Triple Option‘ podcast. During his seven-year stint at Ohio State, Meyer was 7-1 combined against Penn State and Oregon (6-1 vs. Penn State, 1-0 vs. Oregon).
Meyer picks Oregon to win on the road in Happy Valley
“On tape, it’s Oregon winning the game,” Meyer said. “But then I go back and say Oregon had a schedule where Oklahoma State is normally a challenge, but they’re awful. I went back and watched that Northwestern game and they’re not good. And Oregon State usually is a great test. But they’re bad. Real bad. Penn State has played probably the worst non-conference slate that I can remember.

“So, I don’t know other than the respect I have for that damn ‘White Out.’ That’s a seven-pointer (swing) man. So I’m gonna say Oregon is gonna win the game but it’s gonna be a walk-off. It’s gonna be a field goal or a missed field goal by Penn State. I think it’s gonna be one of the great games of the year in one of the best environments in college football. Normally I have an idea after you see a team go 3-0 or 4-0 but with Penn State, I have no idea.”
Since taking over at Penn State in 2014, head coach James Franklin’s teams are 15-28 against ranked opponents. Dan Lanning, who took over at Oregon in 2022, has led the Ducks to a 10-6 record against ranked opponents.
Kickoff for Saturday night’s massive matchup is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on NBC.
