Urban Meyer shoots down potential rumors about Marcus Freeman taking Michigan job: 'You out of your mind?'
Michigan suddenly found itself in a coaching search after firing Sherrone Moore on Wednesday. Multiple sitting power conference head coaches have been linked to the Wolverines since then. Rumors run crazy, and, apparently, Urban Meyer recently heard one himself.
Meyer spoke about the possibility of Marcus Freeman taking the Michigan job on the latest episode of The Triple Option. His reaction was about what you expect, downplaying the idea of the Notre Dame head coach leaving for Ann Arbor. If anything, Freeman’s agent is looking to get his client a better deal.
“I don’t have much inside scoop on this,” Meyer said. “But someone said Marcus Freeman. What are you, out of your mind? … When you hear that stuff, that’s an agent out there, throwing his name out. I can promise you, you’re going to hear the words ‘extension’ and ‘a raise.'”
The series might currently be dormant but there is a historical rivalry between Michigan and Notre Dame. Seeing an active head coach crossover would provide an unprecedented move. Especially in an era where both programs have seen a nice run of success. Much of Notre Dame’s comes due to Freeman.
On3’s Pete Nakos recently outlined who the leading candidates for Michigan are. You can check out the intel piece here. Athletic director Warde Manuel has a huge hire to make, needing to find some stability for the Wolverines after multiple scandals have popped up.

Whether there is any truth behind the rumor, Meyer is not buying the idea. Freeman did recently sign an extension with Notre Dame, keeping him there through the end of the decade plus a year. Maybe another one is on the way at some point this season.
More on recent success for Notre Dame under Marcus Freeman
Last season saw the Irish play in the College Football Playoff national championship. A run possible by getting into the 12-team field at 10-2, Notre Dame beat Indiana, Georgia, and Penn State along the way. Ohio State was the only thing keeping them from a title they have been looking for since 1988.
Many in South Bend thought they would get another opportunity this year, matching the previous record of 10-2. However, the CFP committee controversially moved them out of a spot on Selection Sunday, opting for Alabama and Miami. Since then, not much chatter has come regarding Freeman making any kind of move, let alone for a rival.
