Virginia Tech linebacker Michael Short will redshirt the remainder of the 2025 college football season and enter the transfer portal, On3 has learned. The former North Carolina transfer will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Short finished with 23 total tackles across nine games last season for the Tar Heels. In four games this season for the Hokies, he posted 21 tackles and a sack.

In a statement posted on social media, Short said he wants to evaluate his options after undergoing two coaching changes in two years. Virginia Tech fired Brent Pry earlier in September, opening the 30-day transfer portal window for players. Shorts is the third player to take advantage of the portal opening.

“This is now the second year in a row I’ve experienced my head coach being fired midseason, and I am excited to find a new program where I can continue to display my talents,” the linebacker wrote.

As a member of the Class of 2023, Michael Short was a three-star recruit out of Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 32 overall prospect in the state, the No. 123 linebacker in the class and the No. 1,255 overall prospect in the class.

More than 3,300 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2024-25 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at just over 3,000 transfers. The NCAA eliminated the spring transfer portal window earlier this month but no dates have been set for the one-time-only window.

In data gathered over the first two years with transfer windows, the NCAA found that most athletes enter the portal within the first four weeks of the portal opening. The study showed that 73% of men’s and women’s basketball undergraduate athletes entered during the first four weeks. That increased to 82% for men and 86% for women in 2024.
