According to Billy Liucci of TexAgs, Alabama wide receiver coach Holmon Wiggins will be leaving in favor of the same role with the Texas A&M Aggies. A huge hire for Mike Elko, bringing one of the SEC’s best assistant coaches to College Station.

“BREAKING: A&M coaching staff with a head-turning hire, as WR coach @HolmonWiggins makes the move from Tuscaloosa to Aggieland,” Liucci said. “Wiggins had been working under Nick Saban since the 2019 season. Big-time hire for the Maroon & White.”

Wiggins has been with Alabama since the 2019 season, being the wide receivers coach throughout his entire tenure. Beginning in 2021, Wiggins also served as the assistant head coach. Texas A&M will be hiring someone Nick Saban clearly has a ton of trust in.

Recruiting has been the name of the game for Wiggins while in Tuscaloosa, continually landing some of the top-rated prospects in the country. His best job came during the 2021 recruiting cycle, signing four of the top 10 wide receivers in the class.

More recently, Wiggins was the primary recruiter for current Alabama commit and 2024 Five-Star Plus+ Ryan Williams. Out of the 2025 class, five-star Jamie Ffrench had made an early pledge to the Crimson Tide.

As for the on-field production, Wiggins’ resume is quite impressive. The biggest standout is DeVonta Smith winning the Heisman Trophy during the 2022 season. He was part of a group inherited by Wiggins back in 2019 that also included Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, and Jaylen Waddle.

Then there is the 2021 season, where John Metchie and Jameson Williams were both stars in their own rights. Of the five names just mentioned, four of them wound up being first-round selections while Metchie may have been if not for an injury.

However, there has been a little bit left desired in the past two seasons. Jermaine Burton has been the leading receiver on both occasions, going for 677 yards in 2022 and then 798 yards this past year. At times, it felt like there were no true weapons for Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe.

Texas A&M will be bringing on an ace recruiter to their staff, although landing highly-rated wide receivers have not been a problem. Wiggins will now work under Elko and offensive coordinator Collin Klein.

From an Alabama perspective, Saban now has an important spot to fill on his staff fresh off a College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Michigan. The Williams recruitment is the biggest short-term question, with an official visit to Tuscaloosa upcoming. Auburn and Texas will receive an OV as well, with the Tigers making a major push for a flip.
