Location: Norman, OK

The biggest storyline coming into Saturday’s matchup is the return of quarterback Jackson Arnold to his old school. Arnold is a former five-star recruit and committed to Oklahoma out of high school.

Arnold played high school football at Denton (Texas) Guyer, where he was one of the top recruits in the nation. The 6-foot-0.5, 200-pounder was the No. 8 overall prospect, No. 4 QB and No. 2 player in Texas in the 2023 cycle

Arnold ultimately spent two seasons in Norman. After appearing in seven games as a backup with one start as a freshman in 2023, Arnold entered the 2024 season as the Sooners’ starter, but was benched amidst a shaky start that saw just seven touchdowns and three interceptions through 3 and a half games in favor of Michael Hawkins.

He would finish his season completing 62.6% (154-246) of his passing attempts for 1,421 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions. He had 150 carries for 444 yards and three additional touchdowns running the football as well.

Now, Arnold will be looking to upset to Sooners in his old home stadium. Meanwhile, he’ll be facing off against John Mateer, Oklahoma’s new starting quarterback, who is off to a fast start to the 2025 season.

Saturday will prove to be a pivotal matchup for both Auburn and Oklahoma. Both programs will be looking to get off to a fast start to their SEC schedule after less-than-stellar finishes to the 2024 season.

Auburn still has matchups against Texas A&M, Georgia, Missouri and Alabama, among others, down the stretch this season. Meanwhile, the Sooners have arguably the hardest SEC schedule of all.

Entering Week 3 — every single one of OU’s games in SEC play are against ranked opponents. Though that can always change, this includes the Tigers, as well as Texas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and LSU. That makes securing the victory on Saturday even more important for both programs.
