Colts-Texans questionable extra point ruling sparks controversy

A Nico Collins rushing touchdown gave the Houston Texans a 19-13 lead in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s Week 13 road game against the Indianapolis Colts. It was the ensuing extra point that was riddled with controversy.

Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn drilled the 33-yarder to make it 20-13 Texans. This, however, was far from an absolute make. The officials standing below the goal posts ruled that the ball flew directly over the left goal post. Further replays showed just how close it was.

Certainly, that could have been ruled a miss. It, instead, went down in the record books as a make. It’s a big call in that spot, as the Colts answered with a field goal on their next offensive drive. Down 20-16 late in the fourth quarter, they now needed a touchdown to win the game rather than a field goal to tie.

That game-winning score never came. Houston held on to win its fourth consecutive game.

Texans hold on, beat Colts in Week 13

The Texans are now just one game out of first place in the AFC South. Indianapolis, which jumped out to a 7-1 start, has now dropped three of its last four games. With the Jacksonville Jaguars at 8-4, the AFC South is suddenly the division to watch down the stretch.

As for the Texans, their top ranked defense led the way again Sunday. They held Jonathan Taylor, the NFL‘s leading rusher, to just 85 yards on 21 carries. Quarterback Daniel Jones completed just 14-of-27 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns.

Houston’s offense did its part as well. Quarterback CJ Stroud completed 22-of-35 passes for 276 yards and an interception. Collins had the rushing score and added a team-leading five receptions for 98 yards.
