Daniel Suarez reveals he spoke with Kyle Larson about Iowa wreck
Perhaps the most high-profile wreck during the Iowa Corn 350 occurred when Daniel Suarez got into the back of Kyle Larson, eventually spinning around the Cup Series points leader and sending him into the wall.
Larson’s car had enough damage after swinging in front of Denny Hamlin into the wall that his day was ended. He slipped to second in the Cup Series point standings as a result.
But there doesn’t appear to be any bad blood between Larson and Suarez.
“I had the opportunity really to talk to Kyle yesterday,” Daniel Suarez said. “We spoke and he took some blame in the situation. I mean I took some blame as well. At the end of the day, I’m the one that made contact with him.”
The wreck came out of a turn, when Larson was just inside of Brad Keselowski‘s No. 6 car toward the wall. Both drivers came down inside, perhaps more than Suarez was expecting.
Suarez’s front bumper caught the rear left of Larson and started a spin that would bring out a caution flag and end Larson’s day.
The No. 99 driver walked through what he saw of the situation both live and after watching a replay.

“He also squished himself in a tight situation there in the second half of the corner,” Daniel Suarez said of Larson. “The exit of Corner 4 is very bumpy. We’re in lower-pressure tires, so everything is kind of like bumping around. You can see the back of my car, how it’s kind of like moving around. The 6 car, he had some gap to the wall, then the 5 car had some gap to the 6. So I was expecting those cars to go a little bit higher, and they didn’t obviously.
“We’re talking about if I had one more foot of room that wasn’t going to happen, but that’s racing, you know? It happens.”
While Larson earned a DNF in the Iowa Corn 350 as a result of the crash, Suarez would end up finishing ninth. Kyle Larson ranks second in the Cup Series points standings, while Daniel Suarez checks in at No. 18.
That said, Suarez has a win this season at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, so he’s in good shape for the playoffs. With both in such position, they were able to move past Sunday’s wreck rather quickly.
“We’re all good,” Suarez said. “I honestly, I don’t think it was his fault and I don’t think it was my fault, either. I think it was just a racing deal.”
