David Montgomery throws jump pass TD during first NFL game in hometown vs Bengals

The Detroit Lions had a bit of trickery up their sleeve involving running back David Montgomery on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Facing second and goal early in the second quarter, the Lions lined up with Montgomery set to take the snap.
He did and soon after threw a jump pass to Brock Wright for the touchdown. The score put Detroit up 14-0 and you can check it out for yourself below.
The moment was made even more special by the fact that Montgomery is a Cincinnati native. This was also the first time he played an NFL game in his hometown, where he attended Mount Healthy High School.
Montgomery actually played quarterback when he was in high school before switching to running back once he enrolled in college at Iowa State. He showed that he still has some of those skills from his high school days with this play on Sunday, though.
“Airing it out like he did at Mount Healthy High School!” FOX play-by-play announcer Kevin Kugler said during the broadcast.
This isn’t the first time that Montgomery has thrown a touchdown in his NFL career either. He also tossed for a three-yard TD last season in 2024 during an Oct. 27 game against the Tennessee Titans. Sunday’s score means he has now done so in back-to-back seasons.

Montgomery is in his seventh NFL season overall and his third with the Lions. He previously spent four seasons with the Chicago Bears, who drafted him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
One of Montgomery’s two 1,000-yards seasons in his career came with Detroit in 2023. He rushed for 1,015 yards and a career-best 13 touchdowns that year. So far this season, he had 245 yards rushing and three touchdowns entering Sunday’s contest.
The passing touchdown was not the only score of the day for Montgomery, who also has 39 yards rushing and a touchdown. The Lions currently hold a 27-17 lead with 10:22 remaining in the fourth quarter as of this writing.
If Detroit can hang on for the victory, it would improve to 4-1 this season. We’ll wait and see if David Montgomery and company can help run down the rest of the clock and get out of here with a road win.
