After a five-year career as a quarterback at West Virginia, Garrett Greene is taking his talents to the NFL. He signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – although he’s making a major change.

Greene is looking to play wide receiver in the NFL and went through the pre-draft process testing at the position. He spent the last two seasons as West Virginia’s starting quarterback, but at 5-foot-10, he decided to move outside.

While speaking with the Tallahassee Democrat about the decision, Greene pointed out he played wide receiver in high school before arriving at WVU. Now, he’ll look to return to those roots after signing an NFL contract with the Bucs.

“It’s hard to make the NFL as a 5-foot-10 quarterback,” Greene told the Tallahassee Democrat’s Jim Henry. “When I started playing football in middle school, high school, I also played receiver and am pretty comfortable with doing that. I just thought it was my best way to make an impact on an NFL roster.”

Greene turned in his best season at West Virginia in 2023 when he threw for 2,406 yards and 16 touchdowns while adding 772 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. However, he struggled in 2024, throwing for 2,300 yards and 15 touchdowns – as well as 12 interceptions. He also recorded 734 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

Greene played high school football at Tallahassee (Fla.) Lawton Chiles, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 535 overall player and No. 36-ranked quarterback out of the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Garrett Greene announced his position switch in his announcement declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft in December. Now, he’ll get an opportunity to make an impression after signing with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent.

“Playing quarterback at West Virginia was an incredible honor that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” Greene wrote. “I would like to thank Coach [Neal] Brown, all of the staff members I worked with, and my teammates who made my five years in Morgantown so memorable. … Having sung Country Roads for the last time as a Mountaineer, I would like to announce my entry into the 2025 NFL Draft as a wide receiver. I look forward to this next chapter of my career and the opportunity to continue playing the game I love at the highest level.
