Green Bay Packers unveil 'Winter Warning' white alternate helmets

The Green Bay Packers unveiled a new alternate helmet on Thursday, revealing a “Winter Warning” white helmet option. The team also revealed when they’ll sport the new helmets for the first time – for the Oct. 20 Sunday game against the Houston Texans.
An early winter is expected to set into Green Bay this year, which is why the team wants to debut the white alternate helmet in October. They’re calling for the fans at Lambeau Field to show up in all white for a whiteout game.
The new helmets feature a solid white face mask and a white shell, with the traditional dark green Packers G logo on the sides and dark green stripes down the middle. They do not appear to have any touch of the Packers gold. However, they’ll be worn with the team’s white away jerseys, which do have gold on the sleeves, and matched with white pants and white socks.
White uniforms and helmets have been worn several times in Packers team history. The team experimented with white as an alternate uniform color for the first time in 1938 and also at various times in the 40s and 50s. White was also eventually introduced as the standard away jersey color in the 1960s.
NFL now allowing third helmet option
The NFL has revised its uniform policy ahead of the 2024 season, allowing teams to have a third helmet. All 32 teams received a memo from the league this offseason that said teams going through a re-design process for the 2024 season have been offered a third helmet option. It will be available for all teams in 2025.

If a team wants to use a third helmet for the 2025 season, they have to inform the league no later than May 1, 2024. The second and third helmets can only be worn with the team’s authorized optimal uniforms (classic, alternate and/or color rush).
“If either alternate color helmet is paired with a Classic uniform, the helmet colors and designs must be historically compatible,” the memo states, via Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.
The memo also states that teams must obtain a new set of alternate color helmets for all players. The helmets must be the same make, model and size as the applicable player’s primary helmet. When training camp begins, the alternate color helmets must be made available to all players, and they need to be worn in practice at a minimum during the week leading up to the game in which they will be used.
In 2021, the NFL approved a change in the uniform policy, allowing alternate helmets for the 2022 season. 13 teams wore alternate helmets in 2022, and more teams added alternate looks last year.
