Training camp started this week for the Jets on Tuesday. However, on Thursday morning, New York suffered a scare when it was reported by outlets like the New York Post and The Athletic that quarterback Justin Fields was carted off with a leg injury he suffered during team drills.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, who is embarking on his first season at the helm, eased some speculation when he gave an update on Fields. Glenn told reporters that Fields had suffered a toe injury, but it is too early to determine its severity. He revealed that he believed somebody stepped on Fields’ foot/toe, leading to him limping off the field in pain and being carted off the field.

With that, the Jets are already down their projected starter two days into camp. Tyrod Taylor reportedly took over the reps for him with the team also having Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook on the depth chart.

This comes after what was apparently a good first day at training camp for Fields. ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote Fields, “was solid in his first practice,” per his update coming out of Wednesday.

Fields is heading into his fifth NFL season; first with Jets

Fields is entering his first season with the Jets after signing with the franchise back in March. That’s after one year spent with the Pittsburgh Steelers after three with the Chicago Bears as a former first-round pick by them back in 2021.

In his career in the NFL, Fields has completed 61.1% of his throws for 7,780 yards, at just 155.6 passing yards per game, with 45 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He has also rushed for 2,509 yards, at 50.2 yards a game, and 19 touchdowns as well, with some success as a dual-threat. Most of that came as a starter while in Chicago, but Fields did make six starts with ten appearances total for Pittsburgh last season before the return of Russell Wilson from a calf injury he also suffered while in training camp.

More is to come on how serious this injury may or may not be for Fields. Either way, though, it’s not an ideal start to camp for New York, especially if the Jets are without him for a notable amount of time with their preseason opening in just over two weeks and the season kicking off in a month and a half on September 7th against Fields’ former team in the Steelers.
