Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh shared the latest on Najee Harris, who suffered an injury during the game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Harbaugh said that the veteran running back suffered an Achilles injury and was having imaging done to see how severe it is.

Najee Harris suffered a non-contact injury in the second quarter as the Chargers were leading 3-0. The Chargers announced that Najee Harris suffered an ankle injury and was ruled questionable to return. He was then downgraded to out.

David J. Chao, a former NFL doctor who goes by ProFootballDoc on Twitter and has long provided instant analysis of injuries based on video, noted that Harris likely suffered a left Achilles tear. That would rule him out for the rest of the season.

“By video, we have established that he has sustained a ruptured Achilles tendon, which will require surgery and will put an end to his season,” Chao wrote. Before the injury, Harris had 28 rushing yards on six carries on Sunday. In the first two games of the year, the former Alabama star had nine carries for 33 yards.

Najee Harris suffered an eye injury before the start of the season

This is not the first injury Najee Harris suffered this year. In July, Harris suffered an eye injury during a fireworks mishap and was put on the Non-Football Injury List ahead of training camp. He was on the 53-man active roster to start the year and played in 12 snaps in the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“It’s a humbling experience,” Harris said earlier this month, per the Chargers’ official website. “I’m still going through it in a way. Just that whole situation shows how things can change with a snap of a finger. It’s a blessing every day that we wake up, and I’m just happy that everybody is safe.”

Harris signed with the Chargers in March after spending his first four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In each of his four seasons in Pittsburgh, the 27-year-old rushed for at least 1,000 yards and six touchdowns.
