NASCAR insider reveals which track Mexico City will replace

NASCAR officially announced Tuesday that the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course in Mexico City will host a Cup and Xfinity Series race in 2025.

The first international points event in the Cup Series’ modern history is scheduled for Sunday, June 15, with the Xfinity Series race taking place the day prior. With one race added to the 36-race schedule, that means a race on the current schedule will get the boot. While NASCAR has yet to announce which track Mexico City will replace, Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports said that Richmond is expected to downsize from two races to just one weekend in 2025.

“NASCAR news release did not say which track would be replaced by Mexico City, but it is expected to be Richmond going to one race weekend (expect full schedule possibly as early as Thursday),” Pockrass wrote on X.

NASCAR making history with Mexico City race

The remaining hurdle in NASCAR unveiling the 2025 schedule was its desire to add an international points race. Discussions took place with Mexico City and Montreal, the former getting the nod. NASCAR last held a points race outside the United States in 1958 at the Canadian Exposition Stadium in Toronto, Ontario.

“This has been on our radar for a long time,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR executive vice president, chief venue & racing innovation officer. “We’ve been talking about the continued iteration of our schedule, right? You can go back a few years, went to new markets like Nashville and Austin, Texas. We went to the Coliseum for the Clash. … We went to our first street race in downtown Chicago. And this is going to be another first for us in a lot of ways.

“This is going to be certainly a monumental event for us, the first time we’re going south of the border.”

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez previously hosted four Xfinity Series races from 2005-08. The track will serve as the venue for the NASCAR Mexico Series season finale on Nov. 3. Daniel Suárez, the only Mexican-born driver to win a Cup Series race, was at the announcement Tuesday. He said last month he is excited to get a chance to race in his home country.

“I’ve been racing in NASCAR already in the United States for 12 years. And since year number one, I’ve been dreaming about that. You know?” Suárez said. “And to be able to run over there and be competitive and have a shot to win the race. That would be, to me personally, it would be like winning a championship. You know? It’s in that caliber.”
