The Houston Texans are reportedly trading WR John Metchie III to the Philadelphia Eagles, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Metchie spent the last three seasons with the Texans.

Schefter later provided the full compensation. The Texans received TE Harrison Bryant and a fifth round pick while sending Metchie and a sixth round pick to the Eagles.

The Eagles weren’t the only team interested in the deep threat. Jordan Schultz reported the San Francisco 49ers were in on Metchie but the Eagles had a better offer.

Over the course of his career, Metchie has 40 catches for 415 yards, one touchdown and 10.4 yards per catch. He did not play in 2022 due to acute promyelocytic leukemia. Remarkably, Metchie recovered after he was drafted out of Alabama.

After reeling in 16 catches in 16 games in 2023, Metchie improve his stat line last season. He reeled in 24 passes for 257 yards and caught his first career touchdown.

A second round pick out of Alabama in 2022, Metchie broke out during the 2020 and ’21 campaigns. He helped the Crimson Tide win the national title in 2020, alongside WR DeVonta Smith who won the Heisman Trophy that season.

Metchie will now be reunited with Smith in Philadelphia. Smith stars alongside AJ Brown, giving Philadelphia arguably the best one-two punch in the NFL.

At Alabama, Metchie played in just four games as a freshman. But, he played in 13 in each of the next seasons. He finished his college career with 155 catches, 2,081 yards, 14 touchdowns and 13.4 yards per catch.

As a member of the Class of 2019, Metchie was a four-star recruit out of Highstown (N.J.) The Peddie School, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. He was the No. 6 overall prospect in the state, the No. 47 wide receiver in the class and the No. 281 overall prospect in the class.

The Philadelphia Eagles open up the 2025 NFL season against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, September 4th. They’ll raise their Super Bowl LIX banner pregame.
