In one of the craziest sequences of the season, the Seattle Seahawks got a game-tying two-point conversion against the Los Angeles Rams after a replay review. The officials ruled Sam Darnold threw a backward pass, which was tipped by a Rams defender and recovered in the end zone.

Darnold tried to throw it to Zach Charbonnet, but Rams defender Jared Verse was there to deflect it. From there, Charbonnet picked it up in the end zone, and Prime Video rules analyst Terry McAulay was quick to point out Darnold’s pass went backward.

By rule, that would mean the Seahawks’ conversion was good because Charbonnet had a clear recovery in the end zone. That’s what the officials ruled, and it brought Thursday night’s game to a 30-30 tie in the fourth quarter.

“Al, this may be a backward pass,” McAulay said on the broadcast immediately after the play. “We need to get a good angle on it. But if it’s backward, then this recovery in the clear and continuing action in the end zone would be a good two-point conversion for Seattle.”

Shortly afterward, the referees announced the play was under review. They ultimately overturned the call, saying Darnold’s pass went backward and Charbonnet recovered it in the end zone. That not only meant the conversion was good, but it also became a 30-30 ballgame.

Entering the fourth quarter of the Thursday Night Football matchup, it was all Rams. Puka Nacua hauled in a 1-yard pass from Matthew Stafford early in the frame to make it a 30-14 Los Angeles lead. However, with 8:03 to go, the Seahawks got the spark they desperately needed.

Rashid Shaheed took a punt return 58 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 30-22 after Seattle got the two-point conversion. Then, with 6:23 to play, Darnold hit AJ Barner in the end zone – meaning the Seahawks just needed another conversion to tie it up. That’s when the crazy sequence unfolded, and it meant Seattle came all the way back.

Thursday’s game has plenty at stake for both teams. In addition to a crowded race in the NFC West, the matchup will have an impact on the playoff picture. Entering Week 16, the Rams hold the No. 1 seed in the NFC while the Seahawks have the No. 5 seed. That means the winner of Thursday’s game would be in the driver’s seat for the 1-seed, based on the tiebreaker.
