Washington Commanders cut quarterback Jake Fromm

The Washington Commanders found themselves with too many quarterbacks, so the team waived former Georgia star Jake Fromm.

The move, which happened Tuesday, wasn’t that much of a surprise. The Commanders selected former LSU sensation Jayden Daniels with the second pick of last month’s NFL Draft. Plus, they signed Marcus Mariota as a backup. Mariota, who like Daniels was a Heisman winner, was the No. 2 pick of the 2015 draft. Journeyman Jeff Driskel is also on the roster.

Fromm started out as a fifth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2020. He spent parts of the next two seasons on the Bills practice squad. Then the Giants signed him towards the end of the 2021 season.

The Commanders added Fromm to their practice squad in 2022.

Fromm started for three seasons while at Georgia. As a freshman, he helped lead the Bulldogs to the finals of the College Football Playoffs. The next two years, Georgia reached the SEC championship game only to lose to Alabama then LSU.

But Fromm never enjoyed that same success in the NFL. He appeared in three career games. Those were all with the Giants back in 2021. The Commanders, with new head coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, are moving on with Daniels.

The Washington rookies gathered for their first Commanders minicamp this past weekend. From all reports, Daniels met or exceeded expectations.

“What you don’t see on the tape is how much this guy loves football,” Quinn told reporters. “He works so hard at it. It’s one of the things that makes my heart smile about him, just like the type of competitor he is and the way he goes about his business.”

No quarterbacks from last year’s roster are still on the team. Earlier this year, Washington traded Sam Howell, last year’s starter, to the Seattle Seahawks.
