Richmond (Texas) Fort Bend Travis cornerback Josiah Vilmael has decommitted from Oklahoma State, he told Rivals’ Adam Gorney on Sunday.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder had been committed to the Cowboys since April, when he chose them over Baylor, Arizona State, Kansas State and a host of other offers. After the firing of head coach Mike Gundy though, he is looking elsewhere.

“It’s very unfortunate,” he said when the news broke earlier this week. “I’m not sure how to feel in this moment. My recruitment has picked up big-time in these past few weeks.”

Vilmael told Gorney he was was still hearing from several programs, such as Baylor, Nebraska, Texas and Wisconsin. And he told Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman he was considering those schools even before his official decommitment because of the uncertainty in Stillwater.

“I wasn’t considering other options at the time,” Vilmael said. “But the schools reaching out are Texas, Baylor, Mississippi State, Stephen F. Austin, HoustonMarylandUTEPWyomingArizona and Kansas State.”

Rated as a three-star prospect, Vilmael checks in as No. 199 overall prospect in Texas, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.

Cowboys’ class continues to fall apart

Vilmael is the latest departure from Oklahoma State’s class, with the Cowboys now holding just nine commitments.

In leaving the class, he joins quarterback Kase Evans, running back Kaydin Jones, offensive tackle Aiden Martin, linebacker Trey McGlothlin, and wide receiver Jabarie Thornton, who all decommitted earlier this week. He is also the ninth player overall in the class to decommit from the ‘Pokes, joining the aforementioned players as well as EDGE Jaylen Stewart, running back Kaydin Jones and receiver Jabarie Thornton.

Each of the first three prospects decommitted in June, with Bradford flipping to TCU, Lincoln flipping to Arkansas and Stewart flipping to Illinois.

Gundy was in the midst of his 21st season as the head coach at his alma mater, where he became the winningest coach in program history. But his on-field results — and recruiting efforts — suffered greatly over the past few years.

OSU’s 2023 recruiting class ranked No. 55 nationally, followed by the No. 50 class in 2024 and No. 43 class in 2025. This group was in that range before his firing, but has now dropped to No. 77 and last in the Big 12.
