Roger Federer stops by Stanford before Laver Cup

Earlier this week, Stanford men’s and women’s tennis got a visit from an all-time legend in Roger Federer. Federer was in town for Laver Cup, which is being held at the Chase Center in San Francisco this weekend (Friday, September 19th-Sunday, September 21st). Laver Cup is a men’s team tennis tournament that started in 2017 to honor tennis great Rod Laver. The format is Team World vs. Team Europe and is played over the span of three days. Federer is part of the team that manages the tournament every year.
Regarding Stanford, Federer’s agent is Tony Godsick, whose son Nico Godsick is on the Stanford men’s tennis team. With that connection in hand, Federer spent some time hitting on Stanford’s spanking new tennis facility and meeting with some of the players on the team. This also isn’t the first time Federer has made a stop by The Farm. He spoke to the men’s team last year as well, so they’ve been graced by his presence a couple of times.
Federer being such a legend of the sport and international icon, it really is neat for Stanford men’s and women’s tennis to get to spend some time with him. It’s always inspiring to be around the best of the best in their sport and nobody did it better than Federer: 20 grand slam titles, a record eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Open titles, and five US Open titles. Federer has just the one French Open title, but he has Rafael Nadal to thank for that.
Looking ahead to the 2025-26 tennis season, Stanford men’s tennis is coming off a season in which they reached the semifinals of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2003, so they’ll once again look to have a strong season and compete for a national title. As for Stanford women’s tennis, they’re coming off a run to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. With the number one ranked recruiting class in the nation coming in, they too will look to make a run at a national championship.
