Deacons pile up the points on Camels
WINSTON-SALEM – Wake Forest scored the first eight points, led by double digits before the first media timeout and kept the foot on the accelerator against Campbell.
The result was a 99-51 victory on Tuesday night at Joel Coliseum.
Wake Forest (5-2) wasted little time in turning its first of two buy games this week into a blowout. Mekhi Mason and Juke Harris nailed 3-pointers on Wake’s first two possessions. The lead was 13-2 before the 16-minute mark when first-year Campbell coach John Andrezejek burned a timeout.
Mason scored 11 of Wake’s first 16 points, drilling three 3-pointers. That came on the heels of him making 2 of 8 3-pointers against Memphis in Wake’s last game.
Harris led the Deacons with 17 points, making 5 of 9 3-pointers. He’s now shooting 42.1% from long distance this season (16-for-38). Mason scored 16 and with nine rebounds, was one shy of his second double-double of the season.
Tre’Von Spillers had 10 points and seven rebounds, with Myles Colvin supplying 13 points off the bench.
Campbell (3-4) narrowed Wake’s lead to 16-9 with 12½ minutes left in the first half. Wake’s decisive run was 17-0, over the course of only about 4-plus minutes.
That helped Wake Forest into halftime with a 50-23 lead. It’s the third-largest halftime lead of Steve Forbes’ six seasons as Wake’s coach — twice, the Deacons have had 29-point halftime leads (against Delaware State in 2020 and against Hampton in 2022.
Wake Forest pushed the lead further in the second half without any huge scoring runs. The Deacons recorded their sixth kill — three straight defensive stops — with about 17 minutes left in the game.
