Minnesota Countdown to Kickoff: No. 34 Johann Cardenas

Only 34 days remain until the Minnesota Golden Gophers begin their 2024 season on August 28 against the Buffalo Bulls at Huntington Bank Stadium. As we continue our countdown to kickoff, No. 34 Vanderbilt transfer running back Johann Cardenas is in today’s player spotlight.
Cardenas, who enrolled on campus in June, has four years of eligibility remaining with the Golden Gophers.
The Katy, Texas native signed with the Vanderbilt Commodores as an On3 four-star prospect, ranking as the No. 32 running back in the country and a top-60 player in the state of Texas. During his true freshman season, Cardenas did not see any time on the field.
For the Golden Gophers in 2025, Cardenas is once again looking at a limited role, and it’s not a given that he’ll see the field. Ahead of him on the Gophers depth chart are at least Darius Taylor, A.J. Turner, Cam Davis, and Fame Ijeboi.
Before his collegiate career, Cardenas rushed for over 4,700 yards and four touchdowns at Saint Thomas High School in Houston, Texas. He also had 94 career receptions for 1,464 yards and 15 touchdowns.
