With the calendar turning from November to December, it means the 2025-26 Virginia High School Hoops season has arrived!

Four new State Champions were crowned last winter with Green Run edging Albemarle 43-41 on Kassidy Jackson’s game-winning lay-up (see that memorable play here); Atlee handling Capital District rival Varina 66-44; Spotswood beating Hopewell 57-50 to give longtime Head Coach Chad Edwards his first ring; and George Wythe blitzing Cinderella story Franklin 78-37 behind 12 made three-pointers.

Repeating for the second year in a row in Class 6 was South Lakes, which outlasted C.G. Woodson 68-60 behind 32 points, nine rebounds and five blocks from star Jordan Scott, who’s now playing his College Basketball in the Big Ten for Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans. Taking home the hardware for the fourth straight year in Class 2 was John Marshall, who prevailed 107-81 over Graham in the highest scoring State Championship game in VHSL history.

That’s where the storylines begin for this season.

Ty White left the Justices after compiling a 321-60 overall record and seven state titles in 14 seasons to take over at his alma mater, Petersburg (more on that here), which will be trying to capture the ultimate prize for the first time since winning back-to-back titles in 1973-74 during the Moses Malone days.

“There’s no place like home. It’s our turn now in Petersburg,” White said upon his introduction in April.

There are other familiar faces in new places, such as Ed Young with his more than 500 career wins taking over at Smithfield and Gary Hall, the guy that coached Villanova All-American Scottie Reynolds at Herndon, leading the storied Martinsville Bulldogs.

No shortage of player movement either. Oklahoma State commit and Top 50 recruit Latrell Allmond will play his final prep season for White’s Crimson Wave of Petersburg. Multi-sport standout and Virginia Tech football commit Zaevion Cleveland left Landstown for another Beach District power in Green Run. DeShawn Spellman, who suited up for Class 3 runner-up Hopewell last winter, is now at Granby High in Norfolk, trying to spark the Comets on to a deep playoff run in a rugged Region 5B field that includes such recent State Champs as Woodside, King’s Fork and Maury.

Check out our initial Top Ten Rankings for the 2025-26 campaign, which we’ll update weekly once the the State Football Championships conclude on December 13th. We’ll have more analysis to come on the VIP Board as well.
