2024 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions select Alabama CB Terrion Arnold
Alabama defensive back Terrion Arnold was selected with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. Arnold, who was in Detroit for the event, was the third Crimson Tide player and the second defensive back taken off the board.
The Lions traded up to select Arnold at 24th overall, making the trade with the Cowboys. Detroit has now drafted three Alabama players in the first round of the last three drafts.
Arnold, a redshirt sophomore, returned to his starting cornerback spot this past season and also received some reps in the slot at Star. After making seven starts in 2022, Arnold started all 14 games during Alabama’s 2023 campaign and was named a first-team All-American by the AP. He was also recognized as a second-team All-American by the AFCA and Sporting News and was a first-team All-SEC selection by the conference coaches for his 2023 play.
Arnold paced the Crimson Tide defense and was tied for the SEC lead with five interceptions. He also broke up 12 passes, which was the second-best total in the conference, while his 17 passes defended (5 interceptions, 12 PBUs) were tied for the most in the league and were the fifth-most in the nation this past season. Playing multiple roles in the Alabama secondary, Arnold tallied 63 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and one sack in his final year of college.
Arnold is now the 47th first-round pick and 126th overall selection from Alabama over the last 17 years – or Nick Saban’s tenure in Tuscaloosa before his decision to retire in January. Arnold is now the ninth defensive back selected in the first round during the Saban era.
