Alabama’s men’s basketball staff landed their first formal commitment of the summer on Wednesday.

Moments ago, Pittsboro (N.C.) Seaforth High product Jarin Stevenson announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide. Not only did Bama land Stevenson’s pledge; they’ll be getting him on campus soon. Stevenson announced on Wednesday night that he will also be reclassifying to the Class of 2023.

Stevenson chose Nate Oats’ program over in-state North Carolina and the Virginia Cavaliers. UNC was, at one time, thought to be the favorite given his proximity to the school and the fact that Stevenson’s mother, Nicole, played college basketball there in the 1990s.

In the end, however, Alabama came out on top for Stevenson, who officially visited Tuscaloosa in early May.

“Great coaching staff,” Stevenson previously told On3’s Joe Tipton of Alabama. “Coach (Christian) Pino and coach (Nate) Oats are great people. They definitely know their stuff and they run an NBA offense. They also have good defense over there, so I like that about them a lot. Great school.”

Stevenson joins a 2023 class that checked in at No. 25 in the rankings prior to his commitment. That group features Kris Parker, Sam Walters, and Mouhamed Dioubate. Davin Cosby was originally a part of this class, but reclassified to 2022 and joined the team last season.

Stevenson averaged 21.8 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.7 blocks in the 2022-2023 season for Seaforth High, per his On3 Biography. He also shot 62 percent from the field and 36 percent from three-point range. Stevenson was also named the 2022-23 North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year.

BamaOnLine will also have an interview with Stevenson’s head coach and father, Jarod Stevenson. We will have a full analysis of this commitment with On3’s Joe Tipton and Jamie Shaw as well. Coach’s Take: New Bama hoops commit Jarin Stevenson “has a lot of skills”

Commitment Analysis: Impact of Jarin Stevenson to Alabama

On3 Scouting Report on new Alabama commit Jarin Stevenson

“Stevenson is skilled on the offensive end; with solid size, he can push the break or shoot the three,” On3’s Jamie Shaw wrote. “He can fall in love with the three-point shot. He has a quick release and consistently has good balance, and is shot-ready off the catch. While he is still growing into his frame and athleticism, he has solid wiggle and excellent hand-eye coordination. He is a good athlete, better vertically than he is laterally, which will lead to questions about where he defends.

“There is good floor vision, and he is able to push the break off the rebound,” Shaw continued. “Can be a good area rebounder when he locks in. Stevenson is a matchup problem, with his skill away from the basket. Prefers facing up. Would like to see him develop a little more alpha, and be OK taking over a game. His efficiency numbers have been high, consistently at the highest levels.”
