Alabama Basketball | Nate Oats on early signing period, Indiana State

Earlier this week, Alabama’s men’s basketball program signed a couple of prospects in the 2024 class. The Crimson Tide officially announced the signings of five-star big man Aiden Sherrell, as well as top-15 small forward Naas Cunningham on Thursday.

This weekend, Bama added preferred walk-on Spence Sims to the fold.

Sims, a point guard out of Fairhope High School in Alabama, announced his PWO commitment to the program on Saturday evening. He had been on the staff’s radar for some time, receiving an invite for Bama’s home game against Baylor in January 2022. Sims also recently took a visit to the Capstone.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder has had a stellar high school career to this point. As a sophomore, he averaged 20.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. In his junior campaign, Sims averaged 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and also 2.2 steals per game.

Sims, who had a scholarship offer from Troy, has scored over 1,000 total points in high school. He kicked off his senior season with a 20-point, 11-rebound, and three-steal performance earlier this week.

Alabama still has targets they’re waiting to hear decisions from in the 2024 class. Head coach Nate Oats spoke on Thursday about the number of prospects they’d ideally like to add to the group from here on out.

“To answer your question, how many are we looking to fill still in this class, probably 2-3 more,” Oats said this week. “But if we don’t get them here in the fall or they don’t commit, we’ve got some guys we’re recruiting that are talking about maybe committing after the signing period. At this point, what the signing period allows us to do is talk about them and takes the visit limit off them and we can go visit them as often, which is good because you can build a better relationship with them before they get here. You’ve got essentially unlimited visits.

“If we could sign 2-3 more, if we don’t we’ll go get some kids in the portal. We’ve done really well in the portal because those guys in the portal want to play in a system like we’re playing.”
