Florida State lands speedy all-purpose transfer Jaylin Lucas
Florida State’s coaching staff was searching for some elite speed in the transfer portal, and the Seminoles have found it in the form of former Indiana standout Jaylin Lucas.
Lucas, a rising junior who has shown the versatility to play running back, catch passes and return kicks and punts, committed to Florida State on Sunday. He is a younger brother of Florida State receiver Ja’Khi Douglas.
“I’m very excited to reunite with my brother,” Lucas said. “That’s all I wanted to do, really. He taught me everything that I know.”
Lucas burst onto the national scene as a freshman in 2022 when he scored on two long kickoff returns and became the first Indiana player in nearly a decade to score touchdowns on three plays of at least 70 yards in the same season.
He returned one kickoff 93 yards against Rutgers and another 88 yards against Michigan State. His third long touchdown that season was a 71-yard carry against Purdue.
Lucas then returned a kickoff 100 yards against Purdue this past season, and he also was credited with 10 punt returns. He could end up filling both roles at Florida State.
Along with his talents as a return specialist, the 5-foot-9, 170-pound Lucas also will give Florida State another capable weapon on the ground and through the air.
In his two seasons at Indiana, the Louisiana native registered 116 carries for 546 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught 50 passes for 329 yards and two more scores.
Coming out of New Orleans’ Edna Karr High in 2022, Lucas was a three-star prospect.
