Florida State to hire UCF head coach Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator

Former Auburn and UCF head coach Gus Malzahn is expected to be named new Florida State offensive coordinator, two FSU sources confirmed with Warchant on Saturday afternoon.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Malzahn, who is a longtime offensive coach and called plays at his previous stops, will be the Seminoles’ primary play-caller, according to Thamel. Malzahn resigned his post at UCF on Saturday.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell got his big break in college coaching on Malzahn’s offensive staff at Tulsa in the mid- to late-2000s.

Malzahn has experienced some struggles as a head coach in recent years, posting a 28-24 record in four seasons at UCF and getting fired after an eight-year run at Auburn, but his offenses have seen success.

His offense at UCF this season ranks 18th nationally in yards per game.

Norvell was believed to be targeting UNLV offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, but Warchant’s Gene Williams reported late this week that Malzahn’s name was gaining steam as Marion as emerged as a head coaching candidate at multiple schools.

Malzahn replaces Alex Atkins, who was fired by Norvell and Florida State earlier this season.
