FSU Softball preparing for trip to London for competition, clinic and camaraderie

The ultimate summer destination for the Florida State softball team is always Oklahoma City.
But this one isn’t too shabby, either.
The Seminoles will be heading across the Atlantic on Aug. 3 for a weeklong trip to London that will include one day in Paris as well.
“When you have nine newbies coming in, we really pride ourselves on the connection piece,” Florida State head coach Lonni Alameda said. “This is a really good opportunity. We’ve wanted to do an international trip for a long time, and it just so happened to fall on this opportunity now with the nine freshmen.
“Getting a shared experience is incredible. Something other than softball. We’ll play over there and do some clinics over there, but we’ll get to have the opportunity to explore and do some things together, too.”
They’ll get some early practice time as well.
Starting today, the Seminoles will work out through Saturday before preparing to leave for London. That could be very valuable time for a team that is welcoming in nine freshmen, Alameda said.
Florida State then will play an exhibition game against the London Mets the following week and conduct a camp for all ages.
“These nine freshmen have really been committed, communicating with each other already,” Alameda said. “I think for us, we get to cheat the system a little bit and spend four to five days together here before we head over.”
Alameda said the ‘Noles will be doing a lot of “tourist” stuff while in London and will also take the Chunnel to Paris for a day. They’ll also be doing excursions outside of the city as well, including an opportunity to meet up with some Florida State alumni who live in England.
The trip will be extra special for FSU pitcher Jazzy Francik, who grew up in Florida but has extensive family in Europe.

“I went a lot when I was younger; haven’t been able to go as much recently,” said Francik, who actually will play for the Great Britain National Team in the European Championships in September. “I have family all over England. … Hopefully, I can see some of them and share them with Florida State and Florida State with them.”
More than anything, though, Alameda seems excited about the team-bonding aspect of it all.
“I think comfort, getting to know people, is going to be really important for these rookies to come in,” she said. “This is a really driven, passionate group … and they’re here to win a championship.”
As for Alameda’s personal journey, the veteran head coach said she has one round left of chemotherapy.
In late February of this year, Alameda announced she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. And she admitted on Monday that it has been a long journey, but her staff has helped her tremendously throughout the process.
“The season was amazing because I had a routine and you have the team,” Alameda said. “And then you get into the summer and you’ve got a little bit of recruiting and your routine kind of goes up and down. … I have one more round to do and then some testing. And hopefully by the end of this fall, we’ve kicked it in the butt and ready to move on for the season.”
