WINNERS

1) DEFENSE: Shutouts are rare. They have to be celebrated when they happen, and Kansas State completed it on Saturday when they hosted South Dakota.

2) JEROME TANG: Nobody is more embraced by the community, fan base and student body than K-State head coach Jerome Tang. He earns it by being so active on campus and in Manhattan. He speaks at everything imaginable and joins the fans whenever a big event is taking place. They were active as a staff on Saturday with the tailgating scene and in the stadium prior to kickoff.

3) MOTT: He grabbed his first career sack in the opener versus the Coyotes.

4) BUDDY WYATT: After already securing Chiddi Obiazor and Ryan Davis, assistant Buddy Wyatt is on the verge of adding Jordan Allen to the class on the edge.

5) ANTHONY RICHARDSON: The biggest winner on the national front was Billy Napier and the Florida Gators. They arguably had the best win of the weekend and quarterback Anthony Richardson was awfully impressive.

LOSERS

1) INJURY BUG: All of Josh Hayes, Shawn Robinson, Will Honas and TJ Smith missed the first game of the season and then Taylor Poitier was injured during the contest and unable to return. It was a week of bad luck on that front.

2) HARBAUGH’S QUARTERBACK APPROACH: Making a decision ahead of time to start two different signal-callers in each of the first two games is an interesting approach by Jim Harbaugh. The Michigan head coach is flirting with the risk of dividing the locker room by taking that stance.

3) VOLLEYBALL TEAM: Unfortunately, the Wildcats dropped their first match of the year after being up 2-1 when they played UCF on Saturday.

4) HOKIES: Beginning a season by falling to Old Dominion is not a graceful start for Brent Pry and Virginia Tech.

5) PAC-12: It was not a great first week for the league that is already in jeopardy. Colorado was thumped by TCU, Oregon was dismantled by Georgia, Washington State barely escaped their contest versus Idaho, UCLA started slow versus Bowling Green and Utah fell to Florida. The lone bright spots were Oregon State, USC and Arizona.
