Before tonight’s Kentucky-Mount St. Mary’s game, someone with more money than you or me placed a $220,000 bet at PointsBet Sportsbook. The bet? Kentucky -24.5 points, meaning the bettor needed Kentucky to win by 25 points or more to cash a $200,000 profit, a total payout of $420,000.

Knowing that, imagine the anxiety when walk-on Zan Payne stepped to the line with 42 seconds to go, Kentucky up 23. Payne hit the first, then the second to put the Cats up 25, but Mount St. Mary’s still had a chance to cut into that lead and keep the money in the house’s hands.

But Zan Payne wasn’t done. He stole the ball and took it the other way for a lay-in with 25 seconds to go. Mount St. Mary’s got one more look at a 3-pointer to crush the bettor’s dreams, but the Mountaineers settled for a two-point putback for a final score of 80-55 and a 25-point differential.

It was payday for the big gambler in a wild ride of a finish. Not so much for many Kentucky residents who got the line at -25.5 on offshore betting sites. (Hand up.)

Congrats to whoever that anonymous rich person is on furthering their financial success. It made the second-half blowout very interesting until the very end.
