Recruiting the state of Kentucky changed in December. Scott Satterfield’s abrupt departure brought Jeff Brohm back to the University of Louisville. There’s now more competition for the best high school football players the Commonwealth has to offer.

Following Bobby Petrino’s departure, high school coaches across the state vented their frustrations with his regime after they were largely ignored by his Louisville coaching staff. Scott Satterfield vowed to change that, but it was an empty promise. In three full recruiting classes Satterfield only signed three players ranked in the top ten in the state of Kentucky.

During Satterfield’s run, Purdue might have actually been the Wildcats’ greatest recruiting threat in the state of Kentucky. In his first Louisville signing class, Jeff Brohm brought two Purdue commits from Kentucky with him, EDGE Micah Carter (No. 2 in KY) and DL Saadiq Clements (No. 6 KY). Recruiting the the state will be a priority for the new UofL administration and Mark Stoops knows recruiting Kentucky will be much more competitive in the years to come.

“It’s kind of tough because I like Jeff (Brohm),” a statement from Stoops that drew some laughs. “Not that I didn’t like Coach (Scott) Satterfield. I just didn’t know him very well.

“Coach Brohm, he’ll do a really good job. Great connections to the state, strong impact in Louisville. He’s a good coach and a good person. They’ll do very well. We’ll continue to battle with them and everyone else.”

Louisville Eyes a Transfer Portal Quarterback

Jeff Brohm convinced Pierce Clarkson and some of his California contingency to stick with the Cardinals, but they still need a quarterback for the 2023 season. He might have found one in the transfer portal from California.

Jack Plummer entered the transfer portal on Wednesday. In 2022 he completed 62.5% of his passes for 3,095 yards, 21 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He’s a fine quarterback, but he will not be striking fear in the eyes of his opponents.

Plummer signed to play with Brohm at Purdue out of high school. The four-star recruit spent most of his career primarily as a back-up, often rotating with former walk-on Aidan O’Connell. In his first career start as a freshman he was sacked 10 times at Penn State. After that game, he was a deer in headlights against pressure, often making costly mistakes for the Boilermakers. Brohm may still believe Plummer can be a quality quarterback after a couple years of maturation and a change of scenery, but this casual observer does not believe he will be a world beater for Louisville in 2023.
