Jalen Geiger has bad injury luck in big games. The Kentucky safety suffered a season-ending knee injury a year ago at Florida, the first road trip of the 2022 season. In the first road trip of the 2023 season, Geiger had another setback. This time it’s not as serious, but he will miss some time.

“It’s one that looks like he’ll be out for a few weeks, for sure. After that, we’ll see where it goes,” Mark Stoops said at Monday’s press conference.

Geiger was absent from the Kentucky depth chart. The next up to bat on the two-deep is Zion Childress, but the UK defense must have other options ready to roll.

“I think Ty (Bryant) is a guy that’s really — we’re confident in, and Elijah (Reed) will come up and give us some depth and play some snaps. But Ty’s a guy that I’ve impressed with since we talked about him in camp. He’ll get more quality snaps.”

A three-star prospect from Lexington, the coaching staff has always considered Bryant a redshirt freshman after he used a super senior season last fall at Frederick Douglass High School. He’s played in all six games, primarily on special teams, and has tallied four tackles, including one that produced a loud pop from the crowd late in the second half at Georgia.

The Kentucky secondary got picked apart by Georgia. Carson Beck completed his first 12 passes and the Dawgs wracked up 435 passing yards. Stoops credited Georgia for making great throws and incredible catches (like the second touchdown), but the secondary didn’t just get beat by the opponent. They made mistakes too that Stoops described as “inexcusable.”

“When you don’t play with technique and you play with bad eyes and you play good teams you’re gonna get exposed in a real hurry,” said the Kentucky head coach.

Latest on Kenneth Horsey

Mark Stoops used two words we’ve heard before when he was asked about Kenneth Horsey, the other player omitted from this week’s depth chart.

“We’ll see,” Stoops said. He paused for a while, then gave us a little more. “I hope we’ll get him back out there. I hope so. We need him back.”

Horsey did not travel with the team to Georgia. Kentucky has a bye next week. There’s a good chance they’ll give him two more weeks to heal from the injury he suffered in week one.
