Yes, you read that correctly. KSR’s own Matt Jones is now breaking MLB news.

KSR founder Matt Jones tweeted just after 11 a.m. ET on Thursday that he received a text, saying “Craig Stammen is the new Padres manager”. That report was later confirmed by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, among several other reporters. The San Diego Padres later announced the hire.

“Random person just texted me ‘Craig Stammen is the new Padres manager’,” Jones wrote on X. “So I am going to break that even though I don’t know who that is.”

Stammen, a former reliever for the Padres, reportedly signed a three-year contract with the team as manager on Thursday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The 41-year-old was recently serving as a special assistant in player development for the Padres. He pitched 13 seasons in the MLB, with the final six years of his career as a reliever for the Padres.

“Craig has been a strong presence in our organization for nearly a decade,” Padres general manager A.J. Preller wrote in a statement. “He possesses deep organizational knowledge and brings natural leadership qualities to the manager’s chair. As both a player and in his post-playing career, Craig has displayed an ability to elevate those around him. His strength of character, competitive nature and talent for bringing people together make him the ideal choice to lead the Padres.”

Matt Jones hasn’t shied away from breaking news on the air, as well as on X. However, breaking the news of an MLB team’s latest managerial hire has to be a first.
