What’s that smell, you ask? No, it’s not a pumpkin spice latte. If it is, actually, I’d be very disappointed in you. Come on guys, can’t we at least get past Labor Day this year?

No, that smell — that wonderful, invigorating scent — is the smell of football season in the air. And in Lexington, it’s spreading faster than a Tiktok trend in a sorority hall. That would be because we’re officially entering game week in the bluegrass, and these ‘Cats are ready to rock. Let’s talk about it, along with all the other news of the weekend on this fine Sunday.

UK Prepares for ULM

After a full summer of preparation for this moment, Kentucky’s season-opening matchup against the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks is right around the corner. Are the ‘Cats up for the challenge?

Considering they’re nearly 30-point favorites, I certainly hope so. But as we know, getting off to a strong start to the season is hugely important regardless of the opponent. Mark Stoops knows this better than anyone, and it’s a good bet he’ll have his troops locked in from the opening kick. The real question is, are you?

If not… well, have I got a video for you.

Anyone else have a you-shaped hole in your wall that wasn’t there before? Weird. Anyhow, as the week progresses, Adam Luckett, Nick Roush and the football crew will have you covered with all the pre-game insights and scouting you could want. And if you missed it, you can check out Adam’s initial preview of ULM right here.

This week can’t pass quick enough. Let’s GO!

“Week Zero” in the books

While most of college football’s big dogs kick off next weekend, there were a few early matchups yesterday that got things started. The biggest highlight of “week zero” was the afternoon tilt between Nebraska and Illinois, which resulted in a 30-22 Illini victory. A good start for Scott Frost, it was not.

Elsewhere, UCLA rolled over Hawai’i, 44-10; Fresno State dominated UConn, 45-0; UTEP won at New Mexico State, 30-3; and San Jose State defeated FCS Southern Utah, 45-14.

Now, we wait. Football returns on Wednesday, then starts in earnest Thursday night. See you at KSBar?

KSR Country gets down

Speaking of KSBar, it’s been a busy weekend in the KSR offices. It started with the ProCamps NIL announcement on Friday, and continued with the 15th anniversary party on Friday, which gave us this fabulous photo:

As you may have seen, yesterday was also our fearless leader Matt Jones’ birthday. If you shot him well-wishes over Twitter, rest assured that he saw them and appreciated your call.

And last but not least, the gang got together again in Louisville last night for OVW Reckoning 2021, featuring top-notch ringside commentary from Shannon the Dude. If you missed it, you can watch a replay of the whole event here.

Volleyball keeps rolling

Kentucky volleyball can’t be touched right now. After sweeping Dayton in straight sets on Friday, the ‘Cats dealt out more of the same treatment to Cincinnati yesterday to improve to 3-0 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in all sets. If early results are any indication, it looks like the national champs have picked up right where they left off in April.

Craig Skinner & co. have this week off as they prepare to host Northern Iowa and Creighton in the “Bluegrass Battle” on Friday. Be on the lookout for more coverage on this amazing team — which many are calling the greatest collection of talent since the 2018 Warriors — from our resident volleyball insider, Alex Weber.

That’s all I’ve got for you today. Enjoy your Sundays, everyone; this time next week, we should have a lot more fun stuff to talk about. And if you’re really craving that PSL, I guess won’t judge you.
