Good morning, folks! Somehow, someway, we’ve all made it through yet another summer offseason with limited sports action. And while we’re not completely out of the woods just yet, only a couple more weeks separate us from the beginning of the college football season. But for the state of Kentucky as a whole, football season begins today.

Two games between Newport-Mason County and Russellville-Butler County will kickoff the 2022 season this evening. The real action picks up with a fury on Friday night though, with — well, the rest of the state taking for the field for their respective season debuts. Keep a close eye on the website for KSR’s preseason rankings, which will drop later in the morning. Also, as you might have guessed, we’ve brought back the Kroger KSR Game of the Week. We’ll talk about that more a few paragraphs down.

Here’s what else you need to know this Thursday morning.

Brad White, Kentucky secondary talk with media

The Kentucky football team is in the middle of the final week of fall camp. Even though the Wildcats will not open the season for a little more than two weeks, things change once fall semester classes begin next week. Wednesday afternoon KSR spent time speaking with various members of the secondary after a lengthy conversation with defensive coordinator Brad White.

The Kentucky secondary was a target of criticism throughout the 2021 season. Mark Stoops went to work this offseason, adding three defensive backs from the transfer portal, as well as a few rising freshmen.

Cornerbacks coach Chris Collins details the competition on the outside. Ole Miss transfer Keidron Smith shared why he came to Kentucky and what he’s bringing to the table this fall. Jalen Geiger is adjusting to a new position, switching from strong to free safety, while Carrington Valentine is showing newfound confidence as the Wildcats’ anchor on the edge.

You can hear all five of those conversations below. Before you do, be sure to subscribe to KSR’s YouTube channel so you don’t miss out on more interviews like these and our new original content.

Jack Pilgrim’s inside look at the Bahamas trip

Curious to know more about what went on in the Bahamas during Kentucky men’s basketball’s five-day tour earlier this month? When he wasn’t enjoying the many extra curricular activities that the Baha Mar Resort has to offer, KSR’s Jack Pilgrim was front and center for everything the men’s basketball team did throughout the week. He was one of just a handful of reporters who made the trip, which allowed him some pretty awesome insider access to the team.

Jack broke down everything he saw during the trip, both on and off the court. You won’t get a better inside look at what the team did on its trip than this. Check it out through the link below.

Kroger KSR Game of the Week is BACK!

High school football across the Bluegrass State kicks off later tonight with the bulk of the action taking place under the lights on Friday night. Which means Kroger and KSR are back to hosting a Game of the Week throughout the entire season.

First up on the list? A trip to Jackson, Kentucky for a showdown between Magoffin County and Breathitt County. As you probably know by now, devastating flood damage ripped through the eastern Kentucky area not long ago. Breathitt County was one of the hardest hit areas. The game will be less about what happens on the field and more about bringing together a hurting community.

KSR’s Freddie Maggard will be there to break down all of the action.

Dickie V is CANCER FREE!

Following a long battle against cancer, ESPN sportscaster Dick Vitale announced on Thursday night that he has won his fight for good. The 82-year-old had been battling lymphoma and melanoma since 2021.
