KSR Today: Recovering from a bad loss to Notre Dame

Welp, that was no fun… Following seven “cupcake” games in the run-up to a road showdown against Notre Dame, Kentucky MBB looked lackluster on Saturday night. UK was able to hold a slight lead for a good chunk of the night and even late into the second half. However, the ‘Cats could never bury the Fighting Irish despite multiple chances to do so.

Notre Dame beat Kentucky 66-62 up in South Bend, the second loss of the season for UK and first since falling to Duke in the opener. The Irish came into the game with a losing record at 3-4, dropping three straight before hosting the ‘Cats.

Frustrations from the Big Blue Nation are well-warranted. Kentucky got smacked in the mouth by a team that was preparing itself by playing Power 5 schools in previous outings. Say what you will about the early-season schedule for UK, but that lack of experience in big games played an impact on the outcome.

If there was one positive that Kentucky fans could take away, it’s that John Calipari announced immediately after the game that he and his team would hold a telethon this Tuesday. As most of us know, the western portion of Kentucky was decimated by deadly tornados on Friday night and into Saturday morning. As a result, Cal and Kentucky will raise money for relief efforts on Tuesday.

(If you missed what KY Governor Andy Beshear said about the damage when he joined yesterday’s pregame show, you can catch up on that right here.)

Onto the next one…

Kentucky will head to Las Vegas next week, where it’ll face the Ohio State Buckeyes in what will be another important NCAA Tournament seeding game for the ‘Cats.

Kentucky WBB heads up to No. 7 Louisville

Coming off a loss to DePaul, the next challenge won’t be any easier.

Kentucky WBB couldn’t beat the Blue Demons earlier this week inside of Rupp Arena; on a night where the program honored former head coach Matthew Mitchell. UK will have its hands full once again on Sunday afternoon, this time on the road against its in-state rival, the Louisville Cardinals.

No. 7 UL is 7-1 on the season with its only loss coming in the opener against an Arizona squad that is currently ranked No. 6 in the country. Kentucky and Louisville didn’t meet last season due to scheduling issues brought on by COVID-19, but will face off once again at 1 p.m. EST on ESPN.

Another football transfer

Attrition continues to hit the Kentucky football roster, this time in sophomore defensive back Moses Douglass. The former four-star prospect officially entered the NCAA transfer portal on Saturday, as reported by On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Douglass, one of the nation’s top-30 safety prospects by Rivals and 247sports in 2019, racked up six tackles (five solo) in three years for the Wildcats. He had four total tackles in 2021, three against Louisiana Monroe and one against Louisville.

He originally signed with Kentucky over Michigan State, Louisville, and Georgia Tech, among others. But now he’s on his way out. As of now, the 2019 recruiting class has just eight players left out of a 21-man group.
