Coen Echols was a key addition in the 2024 recruiting class for Brad Davis out of Katy, Texas. Echols spent two years at LSU and is now headed to the transfer portal.

Echols announced the decision on social media on Tuesday afternoon after the coaching changes across the board with the hiring of Lane Kiffin as the head coach.

“I would like to begin by thanking God for the incredible gift and honor of playing this amazing sport of Football. I am filled with gratitude for the time that I have spent as a member of the LSU Tigers football team and the opportunity to be a part of the LSU community.

I am incredibly grateful for Coach Brian Kelly, Coach Frank Wilson, Coach Brad Davis, and the entire football staff for the time, trust, and lessons that have shaped me. To my teammates, thank you for the brotherhood, memories, and bonds that I will always carry with me.

After a lot of reflection and prayer, I have decided to enter the transfer portal with three years of eligibility remaining. I am motivated and excited for the next chapter and journey ahead.”

Echols started seven games for the Tigers and played 583 snaps on the year as a key second-year player at the guard positions. Echols had a 67.8 pass blocking grade and a 51.3 run blocking grade according to Pro Football Focus. At 6-foot-4 and 315 pounds, Echols was always a talented prospect for the Tigers’ future.

Echols joins Carius Curne as talented offensive lineman to enter the portal. New offensive line coach Eric Wolford is set to take over in 2026 with an overhauled unit.

Wolford is a veteran offensive line coach who has been at three SEC schools in the past eight seasons and now comes to LSU to play under Lane Kiffin. This is easily the best offensive mind Wolford has played under and he will have the ability to mold this unit to his liking over the next couple of years.

He’ll be in an offense that should make the game easier on the offensive line and therefore he’ll have every opportunity to be successful in Baton Rouge. At 54 years old, he’s both experienced and hungry enough to be a valuable piece of this staff, but he’ll certainly have to prove it early in his time here.
