Week 4 Facts to Know: Transfer WR Barion Brown's first LSU TD and more

From Kentucky transfer Barion Brown’s first touchdown at LSU to a night when everyone got involved on defense, the Week 4 win over Southeastern brought a laundry list of takeaways for die-hard fans.

Here’s a look at this week’s “Game Notes” from LSU on the offense, defense, and special teams, which brings Tigers fans a quick rundown on some of the notable takeaways from the 56-10 win in Death Valley.

Offense

  1. QB Garrett Nussmeier went 25-for-31 for 273 yards and 3 TDs.
    • With 25+ completions, Nussmeier passed Joe Burrow (11) for most such games in LSU history (12).
    • Backup QB Michael Van Buren Jr. went 10-for-12 for 122 yards and 1 TD.
    • First time LSU had two 100-yard passers since the 2023 Cheez-It Bowl (Daniels/Nussmeier).
  2. RB Ju’Juan Johnson carried 8 times for 43 yards and 2 TDs, all career highs.
  3. 13 receivers caught passes; TE Bauer Sharp (a former SLU player) led with 5 receptions for 73 yards and 1 TD.
  4. Nussmeier scored LSU’s first TD on a 1-yard QB sneak.
  5. Johnson’s first career TD was a 2-yard rush in Q2.
  6. Johnson’s second TD came after a 26-yard Nussmeier run, making it 21-0.
  7. Nussmeier hit Barion Brown for a 17-yard TD, Brown’s first at LSU.
  8. Nussmeier found Zavion Thomas for a 9-yard TD just before halftime.
  9. Former SLU TE Bauer Sharp caught a 23-yard TD in Q3.
  10. Van Buren scored his first LSU TD on a 1-yard run early in Q4.
  11. Van Buren later threw his first LSU TD, a 27-yard strike to WR Kyle Parker.

Defense

  1. LSU held SLU to 204 yards (88 rushing, 116 passing).
    • SLU didn’t cross midfield until midway through the 3rd quarter.
    • Only 2 drives past midfield out of 11.
    • SLU had 30 total yards in the first half.
    • SLU went 1-for-11 on 3rd downs.
  2. 21 different LSU defenders recorded tackles. S Dashawn Spears led with 4.
  3. LB Davhon Keys and DT Jacobian Guillory II stuffed SLU on 4th-and-1 in Q1.
  4. Guillory and DE Jack Pyburn combined for a sack in Q2.
  5. EDGE Dylan Carpenter recorded his first career sack.
  6. Freshman EDGE Damien Shanklin recorded his first career sack, forcing a FG attempt.

Special Teams

  1. PK Damian Ramos went 8-for-8 on PATs.
  2. P Grant Chadwick punted twice for 99 yards (49.5 avg).
