Cade McNamara has officially entered the transfer portal, opting to leave the Michigan football program after its 45-23 win over Ohio State over the weekend in Columbus.

Michigan was lucky to have McNamara and he will be remembered as someone who helped bridge the gap between two very different chapters of the Harbaugh era. Michigan was down and out in 2020 and needed McNamara to bail them out in a triple-overtime win at Rutgers during the pandemic season. Michigan faced a potential total reboot as a football program. McNamara and players like Aidan Hutchinson, Josh Ross, Hassan Haskins and others rallied the program to put the past behind them and helm Michigan to a 12-2 season in 2021 and their first win over Ohio State in 10 years. They won their first Big Ten title in 17 years. They made the program’s first College Football Playoff.

Objective viewers of the program always acknowledged that he was likely keeping the seat warm for McCarthy, whether his time came in 2021 or beyond. There were plenty of moments last year where Michigan needed a drive and a cool, steady hand to lead it. He answered the call almost every time. Cade McNamara was the perfect quarterback at the perfect time.
