• Michigan DT Mazi Smith: QB Cade McNamara ’embodies the team’

Michigan captain Cade McNamara — playing ‘best football of my life’

Michigan continues fall camp, and we have yet to hear of any major injuries (knock on wood) heading into game week. The Wolverines open Sept. 3 against Colorado State, and there is plenty to like about this squad — on paper.

Practice reports have been good, too. But it’s all about how Michigan performs on Saturdays that matters.

Senior quarterback Cade McNamara said he feels he’s playing the best football of his life, starting with his mechanics.

“It kind of starts from the ground up,” he said. “Your feet is what can lead to accuracy … having a strong base. Really something I’ve been focusing on is efficiency — not having any poor movement or any movement I don’t need in my throwing motion or my footwork.

“So far, I’ve seen good results as I continue to work on it.”

Michigan receivers are stepping up

The veteran Michigan receivers have been outstanding in camp, starting with grad student Ronnie Bell and senior Cornelius Johnson. McNamara and sophomore J.J. McCarthy will have plenty of weapons at their disposal.

“I think it’s just an overall collection of guys that are really starting to step it up,” McNamara said of the Michigan stable. “Obviously, it’s great to have Ronnie B. back out there. He just has a tremendous feel for the game. Really, everyone.

“With Roman Wilson, CJ … and a guy starting to catch some people’s eyes is Peyton O’Leary. We just have a lot of talent in that room and a lot of talent on the offense. It’s our job as a quarterback to get them the ball that way, and I think that group and our offense should have a big year.”

Discussing Wolverines basketball

Michigan basketball finished 2-1 in its exhibition games in France and Greece. Head coach Juwan Howard will have plenty of work to do to figure out a starting lineup, but it sounds as though frosh Jett Howard is shooting it well. Grad transfer point guard Jaelin Llewellyn is going to be good, and freshman Dug McDaniel is similar to Xavier Simpson in a lot of ways. He’s also a better shooter.

We talk about that and more in today’s chat, as well.
