NC State women’s basketball head coach Wes Moore has turned to one of his former players in the Wolfpack program to fill a vacancy on his staff. Ashley Williams, a walk-on success story, has been hired to replace Erin Batth, who accepted a position at Michigan after the season was over.

Williams, a Cary native, played in 117 games at NC State from 2014-17, Moore’s first four seasons at the helm for the Pack, starting 61 times during her last two years. Williams is fourth in NC State women’s basketball history in career three-point percentage (.376) and sixth in career three pointers made (168).

As a senior in 2016-17, Williams averaged 7.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists as a starting guard on an NC State squad that advanced past the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 10 years.

After her playing days were over, Williams completed a two-year graduate manager stint at Indiana and was hired as an assistant coach at Furman in 2019. After one season in that role, she returned to Bloomington as a full-time assistant, a position she held for the past two years.

In her first season at Indiana, Williams helped the Hoosiers upset top-seeded NC State in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Indiana reached the Big Ten title game and Sweet 16 this season.

“We’re excited about bringing Ashley back home to NC State,” said Moore in a prepared statement. “I’ve enjoyed watching from afar as she has developed and excelled in her coaching career. She was a great student in the classroom and of the game as a Wolfpack player, and I know she will help foster these same qualities in our student-athletes now.

“Ashley is also a hard worker who is passionate about the game and will bring a lot of energy to the court every day.  Having a former player on your staff that is familiar with your system and way of doing things is always an asset, and coming from a program and coach at Indiana that I have great respect for is only a plus. We’re excited to have Ashley back with the Pack as we prepare to continue the success and momentum we have enjoyed the past several years.”

“I could not be more excited to be back home at NC State,” added Williams. “This place has held a special place in my heart for a very long time, and I am thrilled to return to the sidelines in Reynolds Coliseum. Coach Moore is a proven winner, and I can’t wait to get to work on his staff. It’s a dream come true to be back running with the Pack!”
